Hutba: Muhammed a.s. i milost prema ljudima

Hvala Allahu, Gospodaru svih svjetova.

Draga braćo i sestre,

Braćo i sestre,

Braćo i sestre,

Mnoge naše komšije, kolege i prijatelji možda nikada neće pročitati Kur’an, prisustvovati hutbi niti otvoriti knjigu o životu Muhammeda, sallallahu alejhi ve sellem, ali će upoznati muslimane.

Amin.

MUHAMMAD S.A.W.S. AND MERCY TOWARD PEOPLE

All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. We seek His help and forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is His servant and Messenger. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions.

Dear brothers and sisters,

In the first two khutbahs of this final part of our series, we spoke about Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) as the best example for us to follow, and then we looked at his example within family life. Today, we continue by reflecting on a quality that was present throughout his entire life and without which we cannot fully understand his mission: his mercy toward people. Allah says: “We have sent you only as a mercy to the worlds.” (Al-Anbiya, 21:107)

Allah does not describe Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) as a mercy only to Muslims, only to Arabs, or only to the people of his generation. He was sent as a mercy to the worlds, and that mercy could be seen in the way he treated his family and friends, the poor and vulnerable, and even those who rejected him and caused him harm.

Brothers and sisters,

In an earlier khutbah, we mentioned what happened in Ta’if, where the Prophet (s.a.w.s) was rejected, humiliated, and attacked with stones. When he was given the opportunity for the people of Ta’if to be punished, he did not ask for their destruction. Instead, he expressed hope that from their descendants would come people who would worship Allah.

This teaches us something remarkable about the character of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.): he did not look at people only according to what they were at the moment they were doing wrong; he also considered what they could become through the guidance of Allah.

His mercy was also clearly demonstrated when he returned to Makkah after years of persecution. Standing before him were people who had insulted him, persecuted his followers, driven him from his home, and fought against him. Now the balance of power had changed, yet he did not turn that moment into an opportunity for personal revenge. Instead, he demonstrated forgiveness, restraint, and generosity.

There is an important lesson in this for all of us. It is easy to speak about forgiveness when we have no ability to respond, but our true character is revealed when we have the power to respond and still refuse to allow anger to make us unjust.

The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “The strong person is not the one who overcomes others in wrestling. Rather, the strong person is the one who controls himself when he becomes angry.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

How much we need this kind of strength today.

We live at a time when hurting another person can happen in seconds. A message written in anger, a comment on social media, or a few careless words can damage a relationship that took years to build. Families become divided over misunderstandings, friendships end because of disagreements, and people sometimes stop speaking to one another over issues that are not worth the price they eventually pay.

Following Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) means understanding that we do not have to respond to every provocation, win every argument, or return every insult. Sometimes the greater victory is to protect our hearts from hatred and our tongues from words that we will later regret.

Brothers and sisters,

The mercy of the Prophet (s.a.w.s) was especially visible in his treatment of those whom society could easily overlook. He cared for the poor, visited the sick, showed affection toward children, helped those in need, and taught his Ummah that the value of a human being is not determined by wealth, social status, ethnicity, or family background.

Allah describes him by saying: “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Your suffering distresses him. He is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is gracious and merciful.” (At-Tawbah, 9:128)

The suffering of others mattered to him. Their pain was not someone else’s problem, and their weakness was never a reason for him to ignore them.

This should make us ask how much of the Prophet’s mercy can be found in our own lives. Do we notice the person in our community who seems lonely? Do we remember the neighbour who is sick, the family going through financial or personal difficulties, or the elderly person who may not need anything complicated but simply needs a conversation and the reassurance that someone still cares?

Mercy often begins with very simple things: noticing people, listening to them, making time for them, forgiving their mistakes, and refusing to make their difficulties heavier.

Dear brothers and sisters,

As Muslims living in Canada, we have a special opportunity to demonstrate this Prophetic mercy through our everyday relationships. Many of our neighbours, coworkers, classmates, and friends may never read the Qur’an, attend a khutbah, or open a book about the life of Muhammad (s.a.w.s.), but they will meet Muslims.

They will notice how we treat our neighbours, how honestly we work, how we speak to people from different faiths and cultures, how we treat the elderly and vulnerable, and how we behave when someone disagrees with us.

For some people, their first meaningful encounter with Islam may not come through a lecture or a book. It may come through a Muslim coworker who is honest, a Muslim neighbour who is helpful, a Muslim student who is respectful, or a Muslim family that responds to others with kindness.

For that reason, our character can sometimes communicate the beauty of Islam more powerfully than many words.

Brothers and sisters,

We need the mercy of Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) in our lives today. We need it in families where hearts have become distant, among relatives who have not spoken for years, between friends who allowed small disagreements to become permanent divisions, and within our communities when differences of opinion begin to become more important than the brotherhood and sisterhood that should unite us.

Before we leave today, let us ask ourselves: Do people experience kindness and mercy when they are around us? Does our behaviour make the beauty of Islam easier for others to recognize?

If we truly want to follow Muhammad (s.a.w.s.), then his mercy cannot remain only a beautiful part of his seerah that we admire. It must become part of our own character, visible in the way we speak, forgive, help, disagree, and treat the people Allah places in our lives.

May Allah fill our hearts with mercy, our families with love, and our communities with unity. May He give us the strength to forgive when forgiveness is better, to control ourselves when we are angry, and to treat people with the compassion and dignity taught to us by His beloved Messenger Muhammad (s.a.w.s.).

May Allah make us among his sincere followers and gather us with him in Jannah. Ameen.
