Muhammad (p.b.u.h): The mercy to mankind

Dear brothers in Islam,
I take this opportunity to remind myself and everyone here, to strive for taqwa, by staying away from all that He forbids and obeying all His commands. May we be amongst those who are given rahmah by Allah s.w.t.

Respected brothers,
This is the month of Rabiulawal. And yesterday, we have just celebrated the birth of our beloved Prophet, Muhammad S.A.W, the last messenger sent by Allah to mankind. Before his arrival, the world was full of injustices and evil. People were not even sympathetic to those in difficulty. People worshipped many other things besides Allah. The world was lost. The world had lost their faith.

It was at this time. A time when the world was in darkness, that Allah cast his Magnificent light. It was the light of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.. The Mercy to this Universe. Muhammad s.a.w. Rasulullah s.a.w brought light into a world of darkness and brought rahmah to an ailing universe. He was given a huge task, one which was not given to those messengers or prophets before him.

This task was not just to bring the Arabs, from the pit of darkness into the light of Islam. More than that. Rasulullah s.a.w was assigned by Allah to convey the message of Islam to all of mankind. To make them aware of the Day of Judgement. In fact, Allah did not send the Prophet for Man alone but also for all other creations of Allah. Allah regarded Rasulullah’s arrival into the world as an all-encompassing rahmah to all His creations as mentioned in the Quran in Sura Al-Anbiya verse 107:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلاَّ رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِيْنَ.
“And I did not send you (O Muhammad) except to be a rahmah to the universe.”

Brothers in Islam,
If we believe that we have to be thankful for all the good things in life Allah has given to us, then we must also be thankful for the biggest gift of all from Him which is the pleasure of having Islam as our way of life. It is complete and perfect, covering all aspects of human life. Islam is a way of life which frees us from false and outdated beliefs. It frees us from injustices and oppression. Through Islam, we are guided in our daily lives by Allah’s commands and Rasulullah’s examples. Through Islam, we are able to understand our position as His creation and our obligations towards Him. All praises to Allah who has blessed us with Iman and Islam, alhamdulillah.
Respected brothers,
In appreciating this gift of Islam, it is only appropriate that we remember the birthday of its messenger, whose arrival is a rahmah to the universe. As such, we must strive to get to know Rasulullah’s personality and life story, which is filled with purity, physically and spiritually. He grew up as an orphan under the care of Allah. He was given the best of education as he stated in a hadith: أَدَّبَنِيْ رَبِّيْ فَأَحْسَنَ تَأْدِيْبِيْ.
“I have been taught by my Allah and his teachings are perfect.”

The nobility and purity of his conduct was held in high regard by his people who observed that his manners were very different from that of most people. They even gave the title of “as-sadiq al-amin” to him, which means a true and responsible person. He never lied, never failed his promises and was never involved in any forbidden activities. Allah praised Rasulullah in the Quran: وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيْمٍ.
“And verily, you (O Muhammad) have a noble disposition.”
Brothers in Islam,
Allah s.w.t has commanded us to be obedient to Rasulullah wholeheartedly so that we will obtain the rahmah and baraqah from Allah. There are many injunctions in the Quran which commands to do so. Amongst them is Sura Muhammad verse 33 :
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ آمَنُوا أَطِيْعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيْعُوا الرَّسُوْلَ وَلاَ تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ.
“O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Mesenger. And render not vain your deeds.”

We are also commanded by Allah SWT to model our lives after Rasulullah and follow his actions and deeds. This is clearly stated in Sura Al-Ahzab verse 21:
لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُوْلِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَـنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ اْلآخِرِ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيْرًا .
“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad S.A.W), you have a good example to follow; for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.”

Through reading the stories of the Prophet, following examples from his life and obeying his orders, we will feel our love for him. This love must be translated with our heart and actions. Because if we obey the commands of Rasulullah, we will obtain the love and forgiveness from Allah. Allah says in the Quran Sura Ali Imran verse 31:
قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّوْنَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُوْنِيْ يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوْبَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُوْرٌ رَحِيْمٌ.
“Say: If you really love Allah then follow me. Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful”.

When we celebrate the Prophet’s birth or Maulidur Rasul, in reality, we are expressing our thanks and appreciation to Allah for having blessed us with the biggest rahmah ever to the whole world. We have to show our appreciation by performing deeds which will raise ourselves in the eyes of Allah, by improving our knowledge and by promoting the positive image of Islam. May Allah accept our efforts and include us amongst His faithful servants. Amin.
